So Cold You Can’t Think Straight

Do you ever feel busy and overwhelmed with how much you have to do?

This is for you:

Take a moment, and try to recall a situation when you were really cold: a time when you were physically shivering. Do you remember how it felt to be trembling, hands so cold they hurt, your whole body shuddering?

Try to recall: what thoughts were going through your head in that moment?  Could you think about anything else besides getting warmer?

It was probably very difficult.  Your mind kept coming back to the cold: “It’s freezing…I have to make it stop…I have to get warm”.  And those recurring thoughts probably crowded out the lucid thoughts you could have been having.

This is a visceral way to illustrate what happens psychologically anytime we are preoccupied with something that is physically or emotionally gripping.

One of the problems with being perpetually busy is that we dwell in a state where we keep recycling thoughts like these:

  • “I have to get this done”
  • “Monica is waiting for it”
  • “What if this doesn’t work?”
  • “How will I explain this?”

Sometimes this urgency yields new solutions, but more often it leads us to take shortcuts, treat people poorly, skip importance maintenance, and forget our true priorities because “there’s no time”.  Then later we wonder why we couldn’t see the consequences more clearly in the moment.

With my 1-on-1 clients, we work on this:  How to…

  • notice it happening in the moment
  • keep your body calm
  • activate your higher awareness
  • use techniques to think more clearly

Because once you’ve restored access to your brain’s full resources, you have the bandwidth to lead with confidence and compassion.

If you’d like to be better at keeping your priorities straight when the situation around you becomes hectic, schedule a free consultation with me, and let’s make your mayhem more manageable.
