The Meaningful Work of an Ant

A few weeks ago, I discovered a few ants in our kitchen at home.

As I pondered the best approach to corral these visitors, I watched one of the ants moving around. It meandered across the floor, crawled up the side of the counter, then retraced its steps and went up another panel.

My first thought was “what a boring existence”.

Then I paused and realized, no, their daily existence is full of purpose and meaning. The ant has 1 job: go find food, and come back and tell the others. The colony is counting on them. It’s that important.

One of the best things a manager can do is show their team members that they matter. Show them why the work they’re doing is important to the organization. Help them see how the team is counting on them. And tell them why it matters to YOU, the manager. Help them see why their effortquality, and attitude are meaningful.

Last week we released the company’s first online course titled The Essentials of Leading a Team. It’s a great resource for managers who are new to their role and for experienced managers who’d like to make their job more impactful and enjoyable.
