There are two kinds of reminders.
There are the tactical ones:
- Prepare for the meeting
- Submit the expense report
- Pick up milk on the way home
We all have plenty of those.
But then there are the deeper reminders—the ones that don’t just nudge us to do something, but remind us who we are.
Yesterday morning I had breakfast with my dear friend Matthew.
Matthew is a passionate servant, a dedicated father, a spirited friend, and a leader in the community.
He’s courageous, earnest, and loving. He shows up with heart.
And he’s unique. He’s got his own style. There’s no one just like Matthew.
And when I’m with him, I’m reminded of how I want to be.
I’m reminded of my priorities.
Of what really matters to me.
Of how I want to show up, at work and beyond.
Of the muscles I want to develop
Of who I want to become.
We need both kinds of reminders.
But most of us have plenty of the first kind—meetings, alerts, and flags.
What we’re often missing are the deeper reminders:
- Who do I want to be in the middle of the pressure?
- What do I want to be known for?
- What’s quietly guiding my decisions?
This kind of reminder changes how you show up.
Not just once, but again and again.
What about you?
What do you most need to be reminded of?
Who or what could help you remember it?
